Paying Troops at Christmas

Dec 18, 2009:  Republicans attempted to block passage of the military spending bill using a filibuster.  It was essential to pass the funding bill immediately because a Pentagon stopgap funding measure was due to expire this day at midnight, preventing the military from paying troops and their families during Christmas.

Every Republican Senator voted against the defense-funding bill in a 63 to 33 vote, except for the two Senators from Maine, Snowe and Collins, and Senator Hutchison from Texas. The three Republican lawmakers didn’t record their votes until all 60 Democrats cast their yes votes, overcoming the filibuster threat.
