Aug 6, 2009: The Senate in a 68-to-31 vote on Judge Sonia Sotomayor‘s nomination to the Supreme Court by all 59 Democratic Senators (Senator Kennedy absent due to illness), and only 9 Republicans confirmed her.
She is only the second jurist to be nominated to three different judicial positions by three different presidents.
She was nominated to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York by President George H. W. Bush in 1991. . Senate Judiciary Committee hearings were going smoothly for her in 1992 until a Republican Senator blocked her nomination for weeks as reprisal for an block unrelated to the hearings. She was unanimouly confirmed on August 11.
President Bill Clinton nominated her in 1997 to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Republicans once again slowed her confirmation for months through use of a secret hold, that was dropped when hundreds of New Yorkers threated Republican senator Al D’Amato‘s reelection. She was eventually confirmed on October 2, 1998 after her nomination had been pending for over a year.
President Barack Obama nominated Sotomayor for appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court in May 2009.
Her nomination was confirmed by the United States Senate in August 2009 by a vote of 68–31. The Senate Judiciary Committee approved Sotomayor’s nomination along party lines with only one Republican voting approving. She was confirmed on August 6, 2009 along party lines with only nine Republicans approving, and 31 voting nay.
